Rules are the requirements that can be included within in a course, program, or anywhere the Omega Rules gadget has been added. Common applications for rules would include designations prerequisites, co-requisites, or total credit hours required for program completion.
Configuration
Curriculum Management (CM) includes a wide variety of rules by default, each with specific language and meanings - but to meet your institution's unique needs, the following aspects of rules are configurable by an Admin, CM Admin, or users who have been given permission to do so:
-
Which item types the rule may be selected for
- For example, an institution may have a rule available only within a course proposal and not a program proposal.
-
The verbiage of a rule as it will display within a proposal
- For example, the default rule of "Admitted to program offered by a selected group" may be changed to "Accepted in a program offered by a selected group".
-
The verbiage of a rule when the rule is displayed
- For example, the end result display of the above rule being selected may be configured to say "Entered to a program offered by {group}" (with the group being dynamically populated).
The default rules available in CM are highly configurable to help ensure that the language makes sense within your institution. It is important to keep in mind that although the language of the rules can be adjusted, the function can not be changed - so we recommend that the rules language remain as close to the original meaning as possible.
The following steps can be used to adjust any of the default rules:
- As an Admin, CM Admin, or user with appropriate permissions, navigate to the System Settings.
- Under the Admin Settings column, select Rules.
- Select the rule you wish to modify. For example, you may wish to update the rule for "Completed all selected courses."
- On the next screen, several fields are available to modify the rule:
-
Rule Description - provides a description of how the rule will function. This can not be changed.
-
Rule Steps - indicates the path the user follows when selecting a rule within a proposal. For example, the first option may read 'Completed' and the second menu would read 'all selected courses'.
-
Rule Output - indicates the text as it will read on the proposal once all options have been selected. For example, the rule for "Completed all selected courses" would read as "Completed the following: {courses}", with the {courses} being replaced by the courses selected by the user.
-
Translations - provides a field to enter the translated rule output, if translations are used.
-
Sample - displays an example of the the rule as it will appear when editing the proposal, along side the way it will appear on the actual proposal or active record. The sample allows you to test selecting the rule and entering options, to review how it will appear but will not save any changes.
-
Rule Used For - allows you to select where the rule may be used, and for which item type. The rule may be used anywhere the Omega Rules gadget has been placed on a form. It is common to see it within Courses to define prereqs or coreqs, and within Programs to define a set of requirements.
-
Rule Description - provides a description of how the rule will function. This can not be changed.
- Changes are saved automatically as adjustments are made, and will take effect immediately.
