The Outcomes gadget is used to establish a set of outcomes on a program, and link that outcome to courses that meet it. This will create a list of courses associated with that outcome, making it easy to to review and verify.
When using the Outcomes gadget, you'll first need to ensure it has been added to your form. If it has not yet been added, reach out to our Support team to request that it is added into your form. The outcomes gadget needs a specific API label to function correctly - outcomes.
The Outcomes gadget can have both a description and help text, which can help your users better understand how to enter the information. The description is often used for brief instructions as they are visible on the form, and the help text may include details or links to additional information and will be hidden behind the
The Outcomes gadget can be displayed in the catalog, and can be used in reporting; but it can not be used in workflow or to set progressive disclosure on another field.
Outcome Gadget Config
This gadget contains a number of options within the Specific Config panel, which are explained below:
- Limit
- The limit option will set the total number of outcomes that can be added. If no limit is set, an indefinite number of outcomes may be added. When set, a validation error will appear on the form if a user tries to add more than the number of outcomes specified.
For example, if '2' is entered for the limit, a validation error will appear when a user tries to add a third outcome, indicating that the max limit has been exceeded. - Placeholder
- Placeholder text appears in the field by default, but is not actually saved as a value. It is replaced when the user begins entering data into the field.
- Tags Field Label
- If tags are used, the field does not contain a label by default. It may be helpful for users to provide a custom label to the field context, but it is not required. If no label is provided, the field will simply show as a text field.
- Govern Options (Don't allow creation on new options)
- Prevents users from entering custom data; they will be required to select an outcome from a previously established list of options. If this is not selected, users will be able to enter any text to create a new outcome. This may result in similar outcomes with small variants, resulting in a larger number of overall outcomes. Governing the options will enforce a stricter format.
- Custom Option to use
- If you choose to use the Govern Options, this option will become available and required. This will provide a list of option types that can be selected for users to choose from.
- Show custom fields from custom option (if they exist)
- If the option type that you select for the Custom Option to use after choosing to Govern the options contains a custom field type - enabling this will allow it to display.
For example, this learning outcome contains a custom field:
When this outcome is selected on a course, the custom field example will appear below it, like this: - Allow users to create new governed outcomes
- If enabled, this will provide a menu for users to enter a new outcome that will be added to the Option Type list for others to choose from.
- Hide Category (hide tag input)
- Enabling this setting will hide the Tag input field.
- Link to Program Outcomes
- If enabled, creates an association to an outcome used on a related programs and will display the name of the program on the course, so long as the exact same outcome is listed on a program.
- Link to Institutional Outcomes
- If enabled, provides a field to enter institutional outcomes. These are specified as an an option type.
- Institutional Outcomes Option Type
- If Link to Institutional Outcomes is enabled, this option will become available to select the option type for users to select.
- Show Linked Course Outcomes
- Similar to the option for 'Link to Program Outcomes', programs with a shared outcome can display the associated courses if enabled.
- Add custom fields to gadget
- Allows custom fields to be used within the outcomes gadget. Custom fields will appear above the linked program, course, or institution fields, and can not be moved to a new location on the form.
If additional fields are used, they can be established as a text field, typeahead, multiselect, or dropdown. If an option other than text is selected, an option type will need to be provided.

- In the first field, enter a title for the new outcome.
- If governed options is selected, users will see options available as they type and will need to select one of the available options.
- If the option for a linked institution outcome is available, select an option from the list.
Once a course outcome has been created that selects the same PLO, the course will automatically appear linked to the program.
